This Week in History

by Christie Connolley

January 1, 1898 was the birthday of Czech composer, Viktor Ullmann, a little known twentieth century Czech composer.

The You Tube clip below is from scene three of his opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis. Ullmann was detained at the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp in 1944, where this opera was written. He died in 1946 at the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. The very existence of this work is a testament to the resilience and perseverance of art.
