I believe the point you make here by saying "...what is the story I am trying to tell and what do I want my audience to take home with them..." is the essential part of the interaction. This basically points to two important aspects:
1- What is the purpose
2- What is the desired outcome.
I use the word "desired" as one needs to allow the audience to be free in their choice at the same time as other outcomes than the desired one could be equally interesting. Very interesting article. Thanks for posting it.
