Anna Netrebko “Revealed” on CNN

Anna NetrebkoThis month, soprano Anna Netrebko is the subject of CNN’s Revealed, on CNN International and also available online at www.cnn.com/revealed. Revealed is a television and online documentary series that “gets under the skin of the world’s brilliant thinkers, creative champions and inspirational leaders.”  Celebrity figures recently profiled on the program have included singer Dolly Parton, politician Silvio Berlusconi, and actor John Malkovich.  Anna Netrebko: Revealed features footage from her recent performances in Manon at Covent Garden, Romeo et Juliette at the Salzburg Festival, and Don Pasquale at the Met, as well as an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the soprano at home.  A trailer for the mini-series, which consists of three half-hour programs.

The portrait can be viewed online at www.cnn.com/revealed.

Netrebko’s recent performances as the scheming Norina in the Metropolitan Opera’s revival production of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale were praised by the New York Times as a “comic tour de force,” saying that she “offered a vivid portrait of Norina, her fluid voice lustrous as she navigated the bel canto hurdles in a performance that was both physically energetic and vocally rich.”  Netrebko will resume performances of Don Pasquale in February 2011, and Deutsche Grammophon has announced plans to release a DVD of the production in the near future.

The soprano’s recent appearance at the Richard Tucker Foundation’s annual fundraising gala on November 14 also made headlines.  The Associated Press wrote that Netrebko “[stole] the show … The Russian diva is one tough act to follow.”  The review noted that she “was in prime form” for her rendition of an aria from Kalman’s “The Gypsy Princess”,” and that she “was even more dazzling in her second appearance,…joining tenor Marcello Giordani in the steamy Saint-Sulpice scene from Massenet’s ‘Manon’  … Netrebko sounded sensational.”

New recordings are also on the horizon for Netrebko.  On December 7**, on an EMI Classics release, she is joined in a performance of Rossini’s Stabat mater by a starry cast that includes Joyce DiDonato, Lawrence Brownlee and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo. (An EPK for this recording can be seen on YouTube here.) The album was recorded over the summer in Rome with Antonio Pappano conducting the Orchestra of Santa Cecilia.  Deutsche Grammophon is also planning to issue a recording of a very different Stabat mater – that of Pergolesi – with Pappano leading the same orchestra, in 2011**.  Netrebko is joined on this album, recorded live in Baden-Baden in July, by mezzo-soprano Marianna Pizzolato, and footage from the recording sessions can been seen in CNN’s Revealed documentary airing this weekend.
