Berlin’s Staatsoper to reopen a year late

(Berlin – Associated Press)  Berlin’s city government says the Staatsoper opera house will reopen a year later than originally planned after restoration work was held up by harsh winter weather and other issues.

The city’s development department said Tuesday that the opera’s 19th-century home on the former East Berlin’s Unter den Linden boulevard will now reopen at the beginning of the 2014-2015 season.

It says work is progressing well but a hard winter and the need to take unexpected extra measures to reinforce the building site caused a roughly six-month delay.

The Staatsoper, under musical director Daniel Barenboim, has moved across town to the former West Berlin’s Schiller Theater during the restoration work.

The Staatsoper building had long had trouble with antiquated technical equipment before restoration started last year.
