Brontë’s Text by Bernard Still a Bore?

by Melissa Wimbish

Bernard Herrmann’s only opera, Wuthering Heights, has now been produced a whopping two times thanks to Minnesota Opera. Unfortunately, as reviewer William Randall Beard sees it, the opera was not the “neglected masterpiece” he had hoped:

“Conductor Michael Christie led a brisk performance, but he could not overcome the opera’s fatal flaw: Herrmann’s lack of experience in pacing opera. Too often, forward momentum is sacrificed to orchestral expressiveness…Minnesota Opera makes a strong case for Wuthering Heights, but this is an opera I never need to hear again.”

Ouch. Do you agree with this review? Are there any Wuthering Heights fans out there that think this opera could be a neglected masterpiece?
