Placido Domingo canceled his appearance in Tuesday night’s Florida Grand Opera gala performance of Luisa Fernanda.

In a press release sent out Tuesday two hours before the curtain, Florida Grand Opera stated that “due to a serious infection that has disabled his vocal chords,” the Spanish tenor has withdrawn from tonight’s highly publicized gala performance of Luisa Fernanda.

The release states that the 70-year-old Spanish tenor has “graciously offered to be on the podium” and conduct Tuesday’s performance as well as attend the post-performance gala as scheduled.

In a pre-performance curtain speech at the Ziff Ballet Opera House, Domingo addressed the audience and promised to return at a future date to fulfill his Miami commitment.
