Loud applause and bravos rang through Bass Performance Hall Saturday night at the end of Before Night Falls. But it’s possible to admire the opera’s liberation messages, and the daring of Fort Worth Opera in presenting its world premiere, without being entirely convinced by the musico-dramatic experience.
The opera, by Cuban-American composer Jorge Martín, is based on the eponymous biography by the Cuban émigré writer Reinaldo Arenas (1943-1990). As a teenager, Arenas flees rural oppression, and men-hating aunts, to join Castro’s revolutionaries. But as the new government begins cracking down on writers and homosexuals – he is both – he’s imprisoned.
