iTunes Download of the Week

by Melissa Wimbish

You know how it is when you hear the Final Trio from Der Rosenkavalier for the first time?

Do ya? Well, I sorta remember being like, “What the eff was that noise?” or something like that. So loud. So much happening. And I couldn’t grab onto anything. Maybe it was the people singing, maybe it was my lack of Strauss education, either way, I certainly didn’t get it.

Anyone who has actually taken the time to learn the piece knows that it only takes a few read-throughs to fall absolutely in love. What a fascinating work! All three heartbroken for different reasons against a backdrop of butterfly-inducing harmonies and textures. NEVER.GETS.OLD.EITHER.WHICH.IS.SO.NUTS. If sex isn’t satisfying you, Strauss will.

Here is one of my favorite recordings. I didn’t love all of the voices at first, but just as this piece won me over, so have these voices – flaws and all – these ladies took their guts and smeared them all over this track. Orchestra is superb. (Download: “Mein Gott, es war nicht mehr als eine Farce” and “Marie Theres’!” if you just want the Final Trio…but the whole opera is certainly worth a download if you’ve got the paper.)
