Minnesota Opera Switches It Up

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Opera is delaying the premiere of a major new commission by two years.
“The Garden of the Finzi-Continis” was scheduled to round out the opera’s upcoming season. Instead, the new work has been postponed until spring 2013, when it will be part of the Minnesota Opera’s 50th anniversary season.
“Finzi-Continis” is based on a novel and movie about a Jewish family in Italy during the rise of fascism in the 1930s.
Artistic director Dale Johnson says after a workshop last month, everyone agreed that the piece needed more time.
The new opera is being written by the same creative team that produced “The Grapes of Wrath” in 2007. It will be replaced by a production of “Wuthering Heights,” an opera by the late Bernard Herrmann, known for his soundtracks to Alfred Hitchcock movies.
