Modern vs. Traditional – You Decide!

by Christie Connolley

Have you ever been in a production of Le Nozze di Figaro where the count was a member of the Nazi Party and Susanna was a Jewish peasant?  How about a production of Falstaff where phallic symbols were present in every corner?  No?  Me either, but you may have heard that modern opera interpretation is all the rage!  Some call it fresh and innovative, some call it Eurotrash.

What do you call it?

  1. Eurotrash is vandalism. Audiences deserve to be informed ahead of time when a performance is done that way so that they can avoid it if they wish to. If this is done, the approach will die quickly because few people will attend such performances.

Authentic performance is an excellent way of presenting operas, but it is not the only way. As long as the modernizations are minor and do not alter the original intentins of the work that is perfectly acceptable.
