Verismo – a style of Italian opera from the last decade of the 19th century in which the setting is contemporary to the composer’s own time, the manner is, to some extent, realistic, and the characters are drawn from everyday life. Verismo operas, of which the most famous is I Pagliacci (1892) by Ruggiero Leoncavallo, are often strongly melodramatic. (Definition provided by EnjoytheMusic.com)
