Emma Matthews and conductor, Richard Bonynge  are beautiful musicians and carried this La sonnambula production, bringing Vincenzo Bellini’s bel canto repertoire music to life.

La sonnambula is a cute opera that tells the story of Amina, a sleepwalker, who gets herself into all sorts of trouble by ending up in a stranger’s bed. Bellini uses this silly pastoral plot as a platform for his stellar bel canto melodies. The difficult-to-stage plot has often proved a troubling for stage directors to realise. This is where the Australian production missed the boat. Olympia Bowman-Derrick of AustralianStage.com says the production lacked inspiration, imagination  and inventiveness. The use of ‘cheap laughs’ was the only means by which entertainment was achieved.
