Claudio Monteverdi: L’incoronazione di Poppea

dvd-glyndebourne-poppea
The lineup: Danielle de Niese, Alice Coote, Tamara Mumford, Iestyn Davies, Dominique Visse, Paolo Battaglia, Marie Arnet, Amy Freston

The pros: Incredible set design, mouth-watering costumes, Emmanuelle Haïm’s gorgeous conducting along with her three hairdos and gowns, plus some truly beautiful singing

The cons: Danielle de Niese’s somewhat “pop” music-sounding mannerisms perhaps used to distract from her non-existent vocal core, Paolo Battaglia’s unmemorable Seneca

The design: Staging by Robert Carsen with sets by Michael Levine

Why you should own this: Besides this being the first period-instrument performance at Glyndebourne, the evocative staging (a sexy red curtain throughout) truly brings the story and the music into the 21st century. Rome never looked so hot! I think it’s time this production was brought to the Metropolitan Opera house in New York (where I don’t think Monteverdi’s masterpiece has ever been performed!)
