Operagasmic Production of the Week!

by Christie Connolley

I love to arrive early to the opera.  For one, I want to sit down and see what everyone else is wearing…. the gowns, the sequins, THE SHOES!  Once that is done, I delve into the program!  I want to read the ‘who’s who, all of the singers’ bios, and the miniature reproductions of their glossy 8 X 10′s (which I usually go back to during intermission and estimate how many years ago that photo was taken), the director’s notes, the conductor’s notes!  It is one of the best parts of going to the opera!  So let Operagasm get you ready with the down low on new and exciting upcoming productions.

The Operagasmic Production of the Week is Opera Company of Philadelphia’s Dark Sisters!

The Opera Company of Philadelphia is proud to partner with New York’s Gotham Chamber Opera and Music-Theatre Group in the co-commission and co-production of Dark Sisters, a new American Opera with music by Nico Muhly and a libretto by Stephen Karam.

In a world where personal identity is forbidden, Dark Sisters follows one woman’s quest for self-discovery as she attempts to escape her life as a member of the FLDS Church (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), a polygamous sect based in the Southwestern United States.  Dark Sisters puts the women of the patriarchal FLDS sect front and center. The narrative draws inspiration from the flurry of media attention surrounding the two most famous raids on FLDS compounds (the 1953 raid at Short Creek, AZ, and the 2008 raid at the Yearning For Zion Ranch in Eldorado, TX) as well as from the stories of the more than 80 wives of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young.

An incredible ensemble of strong female stars headline the production, led by Caitlyn Lynch as Eliza, the conflicted central wife, and starring Jennifer Zetlan, Eve Gigliotti, Margaret Lattimore, and Jennifer Check. Award-winning Broadway director Rebecca Taichman stages this compelling production designed by London’s 59 Productions, with Gotham Music Director Neal Goren conducting.
