Operagasmic Production of the Week
by Christie Connolley
I love to arrive early to the opera. For one, I want to sit down and see what everyone else is wearing…. the gowns, the sequins, THE SHOES! Once that is done, I delve into the program! I want to read the ‘who’s who, all of the singers’ bios, and the miniature reproductions of their glossy 8 X 10′s (which I usually go back to during intermission and estimate how many years ago that photo was taken), the director’s notes, the conductor’s notes! It is one of the best parts of going to the opera! So let Operagasm get you ready with the down low on new and exciting upcoming productions.
The Operagasmic Production of the Week is Opera Idaho’s production of Susannah!
Friday, May 17, 2013 • 7:30pm
Sunday, May 19, 2013 • 2:30pm
Free previews for all ticket holders, led by Executive Director Mark Junkert, will precede all performances of this opera one hour before curtain; these previews will be given at The Egyptian Theatre. No registration is required.
Floyd’s Susannah is a continuation of the Made in the USA series-operas written by American Composers, set in America, touching on an American theme. The opera is a metaphor for McCarthyism, set in a small mountain village in the 1950’s, focusing on Susannah, a young woman isolated by her zealous community. Conductor Sara Jobin will return to continue conducting the Made in the USA series. Director Elise Sandell is Opera Idaho’s first nationally recognized professional female opera director.
