Question of the Week

by Melissa Wimbish

I love Michael Jordan. I tried to marry him, but my father is a Knicks fan so it would have never worked.

Michael turned 50 just a couple of weeks ago. I was in Richmond for a performance of Mozart’s Requiem at the time so it was a highly emotional weekend. Having access to television didn’t help things because I truly watched every single “Celebrate Jordan’s 50th” special on ESPN that I could manage between rehearsals and performances. And I cried so much.

Why did I cry? Not sure… Maybe a feelings scientist would say something along the lines of “longing for the carefree days of childhood”, or “experiencing sadness due to the realization that aging happens to our greatest heroes”. I stayed up until 4am watching old Bulls championship game footage and was reminded of how true and deep that feeling of admiration for him runs in this nearly 30-year-old soul. Call it a silly fascination if you like, but I believe without Michael, I wouldn’t believe so hard in what it really is to be a champion. I just want to be him, except not as sweaty.

Who is your basketball idol, Operagasm readers? I want to know. Please share your nerdy basketball wet dreams below in the comments section.
