So Good It’s Frightening: Jessye

by Melissa Wimbish

“What the hell do I think I’m doing?” That’s what I ask myself every time I hear Jessye Norman’s gorgeous folds slamming together in perfection. The first time I ever heard a classical singer was Jessye Norman in Schumann’s “Du bist wie eine Blume” … what a great day that was.

This interview is a favorite of mine in the moments of Jessye. She chats about so many cool things (great questions from Charlie Rose!) including the first time she heard Marian Anderson, the influence of the church in hip-hop, the opera role that fits her best, the aging singer, and her love affair with Paris. Brew some nice tea, wrap yourself in a blanket, and lose yourself in Jessye for a spell.
