“Soviet Sondheim”?

by Melissa Wimbish

Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times seems smitten with Shostakovich! His operetta Moscow, Cherry Town, the latest from Long Beach Opera, “remind[s] music lovers that there was more to Shostakovich than somber symphonies and dire string quartets.”

Although the composer himself had mixed feelings days before the premiere, ”I am burning with shame. If you have any thoughts of coming to the first night, I advise you to think again. It is not worth spending time to feast your eyes and ears on my disgrace…” it sounds like the piece has aged like a fine wine.

Check out the full review here, or better yet, see the production for yourself!
