That’s NOT the Look of Love….
by Erica Papillion-Posey
Metropolitan Opera ‘house staple’ Carmen was negotiated quite fiercely recently by rising talent, Georgian mezzo soprano, Anita Rachvelishvili in the title role with seasoned Frenchman Roberto Alagna as her Don José.
No stranger to the role or its demands, Rachvelishvili premiered the gypsy vixen as La Scala’s 2009 headliner. Though she clearing has a voice beyond her years, Anthony Tommasini of The New York’s Times believes she still has some vocal maturing to do….. ”In some ways, with her fleshy beauty, reminiscent of Anna Magnani’s, and her lusty voice, she looks and sounds older than her years. Yet there were tentative elements to her performance. She took great liberties in her “Habanera” by stretching phrases, scooping up to top notes and toying with melodic embellishments. But the liberties came across as careless, not calculated.”
