Word of the Week

A real live LIGER!

by Melissa Wimbish

So, this isn’t a musical term, but it looks an awful lot like one we all know and love! You won’t find this in Puccni, though!

What are some of your favorite portmanteaus?

portmanteau – the blending of two or more words into one, i.e., smog from smoke and fog, chocoholic from chocolate and alcoholic, workaholic (holic meaning addict) from work and alcoholic. More words are spyware, shareware, etc. This form of word blending is also known by some as Frankenwords. Frankenword was coined in the mid-nineties formed by cannibalising chunks of existing words. Infomercial, docudrama, adultescent, and edutainment, were some of the first words that came from the combination. (Definition provided by WebDoh!)
